You head straight for that spot. You know... the spot that still holds the impression from your turkey vest the previous year. The place perfect for picking off struttin toms or for catching a mid morning nap. You hit a soft owl call.....A GOBBLER sounds off from the roost 40 yards away - almost makes you jump from your shorts. You setup, heart pumping, for you know luck (some call it luck, you call it ssskkkiii.....well LUCK) is on your side. You take your place, on the cushion of your warn in turkey vest - the one you've worn since the day you started hunting, and lean up against old faithful (an oak tree that seems to fit you like an old office chair). You take a deep breath....This is what you have been waiting for...all the practice calling, scouting, patterning the old shotty, is about to pay off. But what exactly is it that you have been waiting for? Is it the feel of the crisp spring morning air? The smell of the woods coming back to life from a long winters sleep? The sound of natures alarm clock? Or the sight of the sun rising through the trees, glistening off the dew dripping from mossy filled trees and spring tree buds?
What you have been waiting for is something some people will never get. Yeah, its about chasing those elusive birds, getting the chance to watch a big Tom put on a show for the decoys, the opportunity to call out and have something respond, the opportunity to take one of gods creatures and be forever grateful for that. But its also about the peace. The peace one feels, sitting in the turkey woods as it awakes, as it comes alive and gets ready for the day, as night creatures return to bed and others come out to play....to feed.....to breed.... It's about the chance to reflect on life, to get away from the cell phones, computers, daily commutes, chores, work and the chance to enjoy life in its most basic form. It's about thanking GOD, family and those who serve to allow you to be in them woods, enjoying this experience. It's about friendship, the stories told and memories made in camp. It's about so much more and some will never truly understand everything we mean when we say we're heading to.....THE TURKEY WOODS!
